On Friday, September 25th, 2015, at 8:30
am, Pope Francis formally addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New
York City. He became the first Pope to address the opening session of the UN
General Assembly.
With the United Nations celebrating its 70th
anniversary, this was a packed session of all sorts of dignitaries—with
numerous world leaders in attendance. This year’s assembly is scheduled to
deliberate on weighty, and thorny, issues such as sustainable development,
climate change and much more.
The United Nations is an international organization
that was formed in 1945—at the end of the Second World War. The organization is
made up of 193 Member States who are converging to deliberate and come to
consensus on how to tackle major issues confronting humanity in the 21st
century.
In a forceful speech, which he delivered in Spanish,
to an overflowing UN General Assembly hall, Pope Francis demanded justice for
the weak—warning against “a selfish and boundless thirst for power and material
prosperity”.
In this historic speech before the largest ever
gathering of world leaders, Pope Francis championed protecting the environment
from abuse and war. On occasions during his speech, the holy pontiff railed
against powerful countries for a callous and insatiable desire to amass wealth,
and he condemned human trafficking and the drug trade.
